POSITION PURPOSE:

Bigelow Laboratory, a world-class facility for Ocean Research, is seeking a Director of Facilities to manage its state-of-the-art campus facilities, their systems, and grounds. This position will develop, direct , and maintain a professional team to meet the day-to-day physical plant operation, maintenance, and security of the research campus, including oversight of marine operations.  This position will require the ability to recommend, advise on, and/or manage related projects.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


    Marine Operations Coordinator, Environmental Health and Safety Officer, Facilities technicians and stewards
    Vendors and contractors capable of meeting the needs of the institution

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS [education, knowledge, skills, abilities, experience):  

    Combination of relevant experience and/or education equal to at least 7 years, demonstrating relevant facilities technical ability, successful management and supervisory experience, and increasing responsibility
    Competence or familiarity with equipment and systems such as building automation, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, security, and safety systems required for functioning building operations
    Knowledge of hazardous waste management, industrial safety, and OSHA requirements
    Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    Experience  to manage a facilities budget and overall costs through optimization (i.e. utilities, contracts, etc.)
    Knowledge or ability to learn the Building Management Systems (BMS)
    Competence and/or familiarity with basic computer programs including Microsoft Office Suite, Netsuite (preferred), ticket management software,  Google Workspace, including managing significant projects/documentation via Google Drive
    Meticulous attention to detail and organizational skills
    Strong planning, coordination and critical thinking skills with the ability to anticipate needs and actions
    Respectful, customer-focused attitude; strong decorum; and ability to be discreet
    An outcome-oriented and  mission-driven individual who is fulfilled and motivated by the goal of supporting bold science for our blue planet
    Curious, eager to learn, and a team player with a “no task is too small” mentality

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (listed in order importance to the position with % of effort/importance for the position):

    Ensure daily facility safety, cleanliness, and equipment functionality
    Develop a well-functioning facilities team and maintain team accountability, professionalism and morale
    Assist in facility and custodial budgeting, and oversee purchasing facilities supplies, tools, and equipment as needed
    Manage and triage facilities issues and projects via help desk software
    Ensure that all building systems are mapped, documented, and fully operational, identifying or investigating failed systems and creating a robust repair or improvement plan
    Identify and implement plans to operate and manage our mechanical systems; work may be hands-on work and/or through hired contractors
    Develop and implement facility improvement projects with the Vice President of Administration and Operations and CFO, making recommendations on the scope of the work to be done by outside contractors
    Manage and oversee general property maintenance - ensure parking lot and driveway are clear and usable; ensure roadways and walkways are properly maintained during inclement weather and oversee snow removal, ensure buildings are in compliance with ADA requirements
    Manage and maintain all organizational vehicles and boats
    Establish, approve, and implement policies and procedures to ensure efficient and mission-focused operations with an emphasis on serving the science
    Actively participate in campus site master planning
    Maintain Bigelow equipment (such as autoclaves, reverse osmosis system) in good working order; coordinate service contracts, preventative maintenance, and repairs with vendors and scientific staff; maintain equipment database and inventory
    Serve as a member of the institutional safety committee, supervise the Environmental Health and Safety Officer, participate in safety and hazard analysis, and collaborate to address safety needs
    Develop and maintain relationships with existing and new contractor partners capable of meeting the needs of the institution
    Assist with managing facility permits to ensure they are up to date, and compliant with the local, state, and federal government requirements

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:


  • Ability to be on-call after hours for urgent or emergency situations.
  • Active OSHA-10/30, RCRA, HAZWOPER, and DOT certification(s) are a plus but not a requirement


The salary range for this position is $77,983 - $114,648, with a generous benefits package including health care, retirement contribution, and paid time off.
