Overview
Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences invites applications for Senior Research Scientists (SRSs). These positions are heads of research programs, equivalent to a principal investigator or faculty positions in research universities. This search is open to all faculty career stages (equivalent to Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor rank). At Bigelow Laboratory, each SRS leads a team to pursue their own funded research, educational and entrepreneurial portfolio that advances the institutional mission.
Bigelow Laboratory scientists use innovative approaches to study the foundation of global ocean health and unlock its potential to improve the future for all life on our planet. Our vision transcends traditional oceanography, embracing research ventures spanning coastal and terrestrial landscapes, aquaculture, and biotechnology. We aim to generate groundbreaking insights and address urgent challenges through these endeavors. Built for scientists and run by scientists, this bold and nimble approach has transformed our independent nonprofit into a world-renowned hub of ocean discovery over the last 50 years. We currently host a thriving community of scientists whose research is enabled by state-of-the-art facilities, a collaborative atmosphere, scientific freedom, a transparent and efficient management structure, support for work-life balance, and growing science and outreach capacity. Bigelow Laboratory is an inclusive community of scientists from around the world that welcomes and supports diverse opinions and cultures and is routinely ranked as one of the “Best Places to Work in Maine”.
In line with our strategic plan, we are eager to recruit a cohort of new SRSs who will pioneer innovative, interdisciplinary investigations to propel Bigelow Laboratory's mission to new heights. We are actively seeking individuals with expertise in various research realms, spanning: (1) harnessing and unlocking the genetic, cellular, and chemical diversity of marine organisms, (2) delving into the complexities of climate interactions, and (3) elucidating the foundational dynamics of oceanic food webs. We are particularly excited about expanding our research capacity in the following areas, though we strongly encourage all interested in the three themes above to apply: assisted evolution for aquaculture species, chemical ecology and/or natural products, computational approaches, icthyoplankton, marine carbon dioxide removal, observational physical oceanography, sediment and/or geomicrobiology expertise, or structural/synthetic biology.
Bigelow Laboratory is a modern, LEED-certified research and education campus with unique resources and facilities for advanced research. SRSs can also participate in Bigelow Laboratory’s sponsored teaching and mentoring activities. SRSs receive institutional salary support (currently set at 12 weeks) to engage in governance and administrative activities associated with the Laboratory’s unique operational model. Salary and start-up packages are based upon current career level and are negotiable. Salaries are also regularly reviewed for bias. Bigelow Laboratory provides a generous benefits package, including family medical plan, 403(b) retirement plan, and paid parental leave.
