Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences (www.bigelow.org) is seeking a qualified and motivated individual for a Research Technician position in the laboratory of Dr. Douglas Rasher. The successful candidate will be expected to perform a variety of tasks associated with a newly funded NSF project, which is aimed at better understanding and predicting species geographic range shifts that are now unfolding within the Gulf of Maine coastal kelp forest ecosystem. Duties will include: helping to plan and stage field expeditions, conducting underwater surveys of kelp forests and their associated fauna, collecting water samples for analysis of environmental DNA (eDNA), and processing samples for subsequent DNA analysis (via either quantitative PCR or metabarcoding). This person will also perform basic laboratory benchtop measurements, as well as carry out routine tasks such as purchasing and organizing equipment. The successful applicant will be expected to grow their scientific literacy and computational bioinformatic skills during their tenure.
Applicants should possess a BS (Master’s preferred) in Biology, Ecology, Marine Science, or a related field, knowledge of kelp forest ecosystems, a basic understanding of molecular biology, AAUS Scientific Diver certification (dry suit experience preferred), and small boat operator experience. Furthermore, the applicant must be detail-oriented, have the ability to endure long days in the field and at the bench, and possess superb communication and organizational skills.
Research will be conducted primarily at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in East Boothbay, Maine. However, the candidate will regularly conduct fieldwork in the Gulf of Maine, sometimes in remote areas (which will require overnight travel). This is a two-year position (pending satisfactory performance in year 1). The position has an expected start date of late January or early February, 2020; start date may be negotiated. Salary will be commensurate with experience. For targeted questions, please contact Dr. Rasher (email@example.com).
