Postdoctoral Scientist in Harmful Algal Blooms of the Gulf of Mexico

East Boothbay, ME   |   Full Time

Overview
Bigelow Laboratory seeks to recruit a postdoctoral scientist to investigate biological interactions and mechanisms that trigger the initiation and termination of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). Proliferation of toxic algae can be devastating to sea life and coastal economies. This work will untangle the complex relationships between viruses, bacteria, and the Karenia brevis dinoflagellate along Florida’s coast. The project is funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and is part of a large interdisciplinary effort that includes biological, chemical, and physical oceanographers and modelers from six institutions. The postdoctoral scientist will be mentored by Dr. Joaquín Martínez Martínez. The position is offered for four years.

The postdoctoral scientist will assume a leading role in the first systematic study of the impact of viruses on the dynamics and physiology of K. brevis and their associated bacteria. In the laboratory, they will be involved in culturing phytoplankton and bacteria isolates from the GoM, isolating viruses that infect them, and applying advanced omic techniques to understand the direct or indirect role viruses play in promoting or suppressing HABs. They will also participate in annual research cruises in the GoM and collaborative experiments in Florida and Abu Dhabi with other team members. There will be additional opportunities for contributing to side projects on aquatic virus ecology at the Martínez Martínez Laboratory.

Qualifications
Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in marine virology/microbiology or a relevant field and be proficient in microbial culturing techniques, microbial genomics, and bioinformatics. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work harmoniously in a collaborative research environment are crucial.
