Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences seeks an individual for a full-time position, working half time as the institutional Safety Officer and half time as a Senior Research Associate assigned to various sponsored-research projects. The Safety Officer oversees the wellbeing of all personnel, including students and visitors, as well as oversight of institutional compliance with relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations. As Senior Research Associate, the individual will work on projects supported through Bigelow’s sponsored research activities. This position has a high degree of independence and is expected to make sound scientific and operational decisions with little oversight.
A BS with at least ten years of experience or MS with three or more years of experience (MS strongly preferred) in a field of biological, chemical, or other physical or environmental sciences.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of general laboratory practice, including safe handling of acids, bases, oxidizers, and toxic chemicals.
At least five years of hands-on experience in a laboratory (and preferably also field) setting, preferably with explicit experience in biological or chemical sciences.
Strong oral and written skills, including documentation of daily activities and implementation of good laboratory recordkeeping practices.
Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills; high level of self-confidence and independence; ability to develop and enforce laboratory safety guidelines.
