Overview

Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences invites applications for a Research Technician. This entry-level position will be primarily responsible for processing bio-material deposits associated with patent-filings submitted to NCMA.  The successful candidate will also be responsible for working with NCMA curators on specific tasks to support the NCMA collection and to conduct specific research experiments as assigned by the NCMA Director. This is a full-time (37.5hours/week) position with an ideal start date of December 1, 2024.  Starting salary is $21.57/hour, with a generous benefits package including health care, retirement contribution, and paid time off.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Applicant must hold a BA/BS degree or possess equivalent experience in a field of biological, chemical or other environmental sciences at the time of hire;
  2. Applicant must have demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills, including ability to document daily activities;
  3. Applicant must have a high level of self-confidence, the ability to independently gain new knowledge, and demonstrated strong organization skills with superior attention to detail;
  4. Applicant must be able to implement above average laboratory recordkeeping practices, and develop and enforce laboratory safety guidelines
  5. Strong computer skills, and comfortability with using cloud-based software packages.
  6. Applicant should possess basic skills in a laboratory setting, preferably with explicit experience in biological or chemical sciences


Responsibilities:

  • Communicate, on behalf of NCMA, with existing and new patent deposit clients looking to deposit agricultural seeds and plant bio-materials, algae cultures and microbes for their patent process.
  • Accept deposits of agricultural seeds and plant bio-materials, which includes the processing, recordkeeping, and filing of appropriate paperwork.
  • Conduct bio-material viability testing appropriate to agricultural seeds and plant deposits, and other biomaterials deposited, data recordkeeping, documentation, paperwork filing and reporting back to the depositing entity.
  • Responsible for general lab management and good laboratory practices associated with handling patent deposits, including but not limited to relevant supplies stocking, chemical/materials preparation, cleaning of glassware/equipment.
  • Assist NCMA Curators with tasks necessary for the support of the NCMA collection (e.g., autoclaving pipettes, setting up culture racks, disposing of cultures, and similar activities).
  • Participate in the respond-to-alarm rotation with the other NCMA/CAI staff related to the NCMA core culture collection.
  • Work on proprietary research efforts requiring heightened sensitivities to intellectual property protections.
  • Report any potential or perceived violations of applicable laws, rules, or Laboratory policies to the immediate supervisor, CEO, the Director of Human Resources, or the Vice President for Research and as appropriate.
